Aaron Watson featuring Jenna Paulette "Seven Year Ache" Song Review
Rosanne Cash’s “Seven Year Ache” is a country classic. Released in 1981, Cash created another hit to add to her collection. This song connected with many fans at the time and still does. One of those fans is country act, Aaron Watson.
Acting as one of the first releases from his upcoming Cover Girl album, “Seven Year Ache” is just one of an entire project of covers of female country songs. Throughout the project, he wanted to find fellow country singers who would make every song he covered that much more special. Up-and-comer Jenna Paulette, his partner on “Seven Year Ache," is just the first.
Watson has a slightly different take on “Seven Year Ache." While Cash sits a little closer to the singer-songwriter, acoustic genre, Watson takes the song deep into the country genre. From the twang in his voice to the instrumentation, it feels more classically country. The lead vocals are smooth, which allows the audience to pay attention to the lyrics. There are subtle backgrounds throughout the song, but they’re not distracting. This pays tribute to the more stripped-down arrangement that Cash had originally used. The tune also has nice instrumentals, including a guitar build during the last section that creates tension until the end.
