Alexa "Twenty-Something" Song Review

Rising artist Alexa hails from New York and is creating quite the buzz in the up-and-coming country music industry. Back in May of this year, she released “Twenty-Something," which is a song that listeners can feel she put her heart and soul into.

Alexa immediately starts this ballad with relaxing and moody piano instrumentals. She begins with the lyrics, “Made a list at 13 of who I wanted to be by 20 / Always followed my dreams / But nothing’s what it seems at 20 / I went to college, to get that job I wanted / And then I met a boy who’s good at making promises.” The opening lines feel like an ode to childhood dreams that have been bent and changed as time passes.

Something that isn’t spoken about very often is the difficulty of transitioning from childhood to adulthood. Perceptions and dreams change, and as Alexa states in her lyrics, “I’m nowhere I thought I’d be / I thought I would know everything by now." You can hear the reflection and grieving of her childhood dreams in her voice; the track reads like an open wound that hasn't quite healed yet. This rare vulnerability gives audiences the opportunity to connect with Alexa and relate in an honest way.

At the young age of 23, Alexa is already proving herself to be a force within the industry. She has already won an American Songwriting Award and a Music City Songstar Award. She is frequently featured in various music publications that are recognizing her as an up-and-coming singer-songwriter.
