Chase Rice 'I Hate Cowboys & All Dogs Go To Hell' Album Review

Chase Rice has an impressive array of hits, and his latest album, I Hate Cowboys & All Dogs Go To Hell only adds to Rice’s collection of popular songs. The North Carolina native aims to take the country music scene by storm with his new 13-track album.

Rice’s ability to evolve as a musician is apparent by the stylistic changes made in I Hate Cowboys & All Dogs Go To Hell. The raw and acoustic feel of the album is a stark contrast to the highly produced sound fans would come to expect from him. Each song offers a glimpse into the more personal side of the singer. Rice wrote of the album on his Instagram stating, "Tonight I drop the best album of my career. If that sounds cocky I'm sorry. This one just took a lot out of me. Hate's in the title but love is the theme."

"Life Part Of Livin'" exudes the message of how life experience can dictate someone's attitude. Rice sings from the perspective of someone who has seen more than enough in his time. "Played my songs, I played my part / Played around, played some hearts / With the highs and lows of this thing called life." It's evident he has learned to take the good with the bad. "Sorry Momma" takes the apologetic approach. The song has hints of being playful while Rice acknowledges mistakes he may have made.

"Bench Seat" is a standout on the album. The track is about mental health, and how a dog saved someone's life. Perhaps it is the most vulnerable Rice has been on a song ever. A friend of the singer was once in a dark place and he recalled how when his dog sat in his lap, he changed his mind about ending his life.

Rice's self-reflection comes in the form of "I Walk Alone" as he croons, "To find myself, I walk alone." The melody and tempo of the song remain steady as Rice sings about discovering himself. He learns to be present and think about his emotions. Much like the entire project, his journey proves to be a relatable one. This is a body of work that shows a deeper side to Rice, and it's quite refreshing.
