Classic Women of Country Music Videos
In honor of Women’s History Month, let’s take a look at five classic country music videos from the women of the genre.
1. “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” by Shania Twain
In this music video, Shania Twain looks absolutely stunning in her long, black suit coat and her top hat; this outfit looks masculine in fashion. Throughout the video, she undresses to reveal more feminine looks. She throws her cap off to reveal her final look: the iconic little black dress. Twain’s reveal into a feminine outfit shows that she truly does “feel like a woman." Though a simplistic music video, it is truly an iconic moment for Shania Twain.
2. "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood
This storytelling song is conveyed perfectly in Underwood’s music video. In a few scenes, we see Underwood singing her heart out angrily. In other shots, we see her going to confront her ex-boyfriend. We see that she has completely destroyed his car, because Underwood carries her Louisville Slugger (to both headlights of course) and we see the damaged truck at the end of the video. Underwood looks absolutely incredible and powerful with her hair blowing in the wind as chaos ensues behind her.
3. "Fancy" by Reba McEntire
“Fancy” is a classic “rags to riches” story. The music video and lyrics capture the essence of the main character, Fancy, and how she came out of a poor, low place because of her mother’s help. In the video, Fancy (Reba McEntire) reflects on the past memories of how her mom encouraged her to get away and become something more. At the end of the video, Fancy visits her mother’s gravestone and smiles. We then see a shot of her old childhood home with a sign that says, “Future Site: Fancy Rae Baker’s Home for Runaways." This place honors her mother and all she did for Fancy. The video is so beautiful and symbolic for McEntire.
4. "Kerosene" by Miranda Lambert
The “Kerosene” music video is one of Lambert’s most famous videos. It depicts Lambert essentially committing arson. In the video, we see shots of her ex-boyfriend cheating on her, therefore, Lambert decides to burn his house down. This simple video is so powerful. Lambert is a powerhouse as she walks towards the camera and yells her lyrics, “I'm giving up on love 'cause love's given up on me."
5. "Goodbye Earl" by The Chicks
The iconic “Goodbye Earl” song and video are absolutely so fun. The Chicks sing in the background while they tell the story of Earl’s much deserved death. The friendship of Maryanne and Wanda is shown visually as the narrative plays through the song's lyrics. The video is overall is incredibly amusing and witty. It is one you won’t want to skip.
