Country Songs About Being Thankful

Thanksgiving is here and there is so much to be thankful for. Country music is known for its storytelling and ability to pull at the heartstrings. There are endless songs that would be appropriate for this time of year, but here is a list of a few that might be playing on the stereo this holiday season.

1. “What I Have” by Kelsea Ballerini

Released just this year, Ballerini released this as a great reminder to be grateful for what we have. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life and this song allows one to slow down and appreciate the small things. She sings, “‘Cause I got a roof over my head / I got a warm body in bed / I’m doing alright right where I’m at / With what I have.

2. “Coat of Many Colors” by Dolly Parton

Legendary and a natural storyteller, Parton has a way of drawing her in with her fascinating life story. She has managed to stay humble over her long-stretching and extremely successful career. Always loving and caring, she reflects on her childhood and a special memory of her mother in this song. Some of the lyrics include “My coat of many colors / That my momma made for me / Made only from rags / But I wore it so proudly / Although we had no money / I was rich as I could be / In my coat of many colors / My momma made for me.”

3. “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw

Taking it back to 2004, McGraw tells an incredible story about being thankful for life from an interaction with someone else. It can’t be predicted when life lessons are thrown our way, and sometimes it’s from a simple conversation with another person. While anyone is guilty of sometimes forgetting about the beauty of life, we all can use a little reminder. “Someday I hope you get the chance / To live like you were dying / Like tomorrow was a gift / And you’ve got eternity / To think about / What you’d do with it / What could you do with it / What did I do with it? / What would I do with it?” While that can be a heavy topic to ponder, it does spur some inspiration to get up and live life to its fullest.

4. “Unanswered Prayers” by Garth Brooks

Sometimes taking a moment and reflecting on how life has gone is a time that reminds us to be thankful. While things don’t always go to plan, usually it’s because there is something better suited waiting ahead. That can be a hard lesson to learn, or even hard to appreciate while it’s happening, but self reflection can be a great reminder of what to be thankful for. Brooks sings, “Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers / Remember when you’re talkin’ to the man upstairs / That just because he doesn’t answer doesn’t mean he don’t care / Some of God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.”

5. “God Gave Me You” by Blake Shelton

Another way to find something to be thankful for, is by looking at the people that are in our community. At times, it can be hard to recognize that people in our lives are exactly what we need. Whether that is the past, present, or in the future, people help shape who we are and a sense of community is needed by everyone. This song specifically applies to a romantic partner, but it could be applied to many different people in our lives. These lyrics can really hit home for some people: “‘Cause God gave me you for the ups and downs / God gave me you for the days of doubt / And for when I think I lost my way / There are no words here left to say, it’s true / God gave me you.”
