Country Songs You May Have Missed in 2022

Jena Fowler

Each year, casual listeners of country and Americana music may miss out on some of the great talents coming out of Nashville and the exciting talent Music City has to offer. As we gear up for another year of fresh music, we're reflecting on some songs you may have missed in 2022.

"Already Crazy" by Carter Faith

Singer-songwriter Carter Faith is one of the most promising rising talents coming out of Nashville. After a series of strong singles in 2022 such as “Greener Pasture” and “The Devil’s Still Down in Georgia,” Faith capped off her year with the piano ballad “Already Crazy.” The stripped-down production is stunningly heartbreaking, but what will really strike listeners is the clever lyricism. In the chorus, Faith exclaims, “I was already crazy, already unglued / You can’t be that stupid to think it started with you / I was already bitter, I was already sad / No it wasn’t you leavin’ / That made me go mad.”

“a hundred years old” by Brittney Spencer

Filled with an elegant cynicism, Brittney Spencer’s “a hundred years old” was one of the most captivating releases in November. A floaty acoustic guitar backs her old soul vocals as she sings about numbing pain after a painful breakup. The lyricism is vivid as she exclaims, The hand on the clock reminds me / You still got a hold of my soul / I wake up staring at the ceiling / Waiting for the day I don't feel it / Whoever said time can heal a heart / Must've been a hundred years old.” Spencer’s vocals are expressive and one can hear the pain in her performance.

"Disco Cowboy" by Adam Mac

The wild west meets the dance floor in this absolutely infectious song from Adam Mac. It’s sensual, it’s smooth, and Mac’s vocals are vibrant as he twists around the story he’s telling. The genre-bending track truly explodes on the second chorus as the production glistens and Mac sings, “Yeah let’s go to the disco cowboy / Where 4 on the floor is the rhythm of the beat / And you don’t have to hide how you’re looking at me.”

"Longer I Run - Hammer Down" by Gabe Lee

Gabe Lee's 2022 LP The Hometown Kid has been praised by numerous critics and even made Rolling Stone's list of "The Best Country and Americana Albums of 2022." One of the most memorable moments on the record is the almost 8-minute-long crooner, "Longer I Run - Hammer Down." The songwriting is as visual as a painting as Lee sings about "many shadows on those county roads" and "an eagle flying over a crimson evening sun." This track is a gem.

"25 MPH Town" by Pillbox Patti

Pillbox Patti's debut album Florida entered the world in October 2022 with gritty truths and hard-hitting sounds laced in its 8-song tracklist. On the closer, Patti slows the pace down with a minimalistic ballad titled "25 MPH Town." The personal song is vulnerable and takes listeners down a steep back road as Patti recalls her younger years in a small town: "Sixteen living too fast to slow down / Getting high and driving around / In a 25 mile per hour town."
