Maddie & Tae Discuss 'Through The Madness Vol. 2' and Their 2022 Headlining Tour

Maddie Font and Taylor Dye, known as country duo Maddie & Tae, entered 2022 with their record, Through The Madness Vol. 1 which features an overall theme of sweetness and romanticism. The duo shows strong examples of lyricism on tracks like "Don't Make Her Look Dumb" and "Strangers." They also show a fun, upbeat side on the twangy, bumping "Woman You Got." The follow-up, Through The Madness Vol. 2 continues the momentum stirred up in the first collection but with more vulnerability. "Volume 2 is a deeper dive from Volume 1. I think Volume 1, it's definitely more lovey, it's a lot more positive. There's still a lot of that on Volume 2, it's just a deeper level," Font states.

The sequel began with "Every Night Every Morning," a breezy, mid-tempo track that features verses that act like a conversation from both sides of a happy relationship."We are just huge fans of the song ourselves even though we wrote it," Dye shares. "It's one of those songs that as an artist, we enjoy playing and singing, and to us, that means it's something that was meant to be written and meant to be on a project and meant to be heard by our fans."

Another pre-release from the duo that landed on the LP is "Spring Cleaning" which makes fun lighthearted references to the hit Netflix show Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. "It was so random. I had this idea of 'Marie Kondo-ing' somebody like they don't bring you joy anymore so you just come and get your shit out basically," Font says while laughing, "It was so fitting to write something so sassy and cool. It came out so naturally." The sassy girl anthem was co-written by the duo alongside, Dye's husband Josh Kerr, and R&B songstress Tayla Parx who has written tracks for artists like Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, and Justin Bieber. Despite the song's overt country attitude, there's an underlying bump of pop influences which makes it a playful entry on the album.

Other standout entries include the opener, "Well In Your World," which acts as an ode to a person someone lost touch with. It's bittersweet, it's nostalgic, and it's a wish hoping that they're okay. It's not close to being a ballad, but the story is still emotionally charged with the lines, "We're a thousand miles from who we were / When we were just a boy and a girl / I hope all is well in your world."

The most heartwrenching tune hits right in the middle of the tracklist. "Watching Love Leave" is an acoustic ballad that places you right in front of the window watching your ex leave you for good. The absolute tragic circumstances found in the lyricism might feel quite shocking considering the two ladies are both married. "The cool thing with being a songwriter is when you get to write these songs, you still go to those places," Maddie explains. "Even though we're both happily married, we still have those 'Watching Love Leave' moments. You get to go back to those times and pull emotions from that." The duo also expresses that the track feels like the older, wiser sister to their No. 1 hit single, "Die From A Broken Heart."

With a singular listen to any of Maddie & Tae's works, it's easy to hear that the strongest element in their music is their harmonies; they quite literally have a talent for harmonizing that no one can come close to. "Our harmonies are really a result of our connection. We have been best friends for 12 years and that's turned into a sisterhood at this point," Dye remarks before Font jumps in. "We have telepathy." The two go on to share that Dye comes up with the harmony parts as they write the tracks in the room, resulting in effortless, yet pristine vocal combinations.

Their harmonious performance is shown most exuberantly in "These Tears." With a stripped-down production made up of mostly acoustic guitar and slide guitar, helps bring their stunning to the forefront. Dye, who usually harmonies with her lower register, gets to show off her dreamy head voice. And for Font, this track felt the most personal." I was literally in tears writing it and in the studio. I didn't even want to show our team that song 'cause it came from such a raw, vulnerable place," she says. The vocal that audiences hear on the finished product was their first and only take in the recording studio.

The two also just began their 2022 headlining stint for the CMT Next Women of Country 'All Song No Static Tour.' with shows in Oklahoma City, Boston, and New York City. "I'm excited to be holding the torch for women in country. I feel honored that we get to do that," Dye states. "And I miss our fan's faces. It's been a while since we've done a headlining tour." It's also been a whopping seven years since they've toured and Font shares her passion exclaiming, "It's gonna be a very high-energy show which I guess people don't expect from us, but we rock out."
