Seven Cross-Genre Country Acts

In recent years, there are more artists that no longer categorize their music into just one genre. Country artists come from a variety of backgrounds, and those experiences play a very influential role in each artist’s creation. We are highlighting seven artists that successfully defy the idea of traditional country music.

BRELAND is a singer, songwriter, and producer, and his musical sound combines country, rap, gospel, and R&B. In 2020, he released his self-titled EP, with the track “My Truck” becoming a platinum hit. BRELAND has collaborated with country stars such as Keith Urban, Lauren Alaina, and Sam Hunt, Tenille Townes, and his latest single, “Praise the Lord,” features Thomas Rhett.

2. Cassadee Pope

Winner of the third season of The Voice, Pope transforms country music by adding a pop-punk twist that she has referred to as “Y’Allternative.” Her background as the lead vocalist vocals for the rock group Hey Monday shows Pope’s strong musical capabilities. Her album Frame by Frame topped the country album charts in 2013, and her U.S. Country Airplay No. 1 hit single “Think of You” with Chris Young led to their Grammy nomination for Best Country Duo/Group Performance in 2016.

3. Blanco Brown

Brown combines rap and trap music with country to provide listeners with fun, genre-bending experience. After releasing his album Honeysuckle and Bugs in 2019, Brown has dropped songs with artists such as BRELAND and Nelly. A viral YouTube video with Lainey Wilson dancing to his 2020 single “The Git Up” led to the song becoming Brown’s first No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart.

4. Camille Parker

Some of Parker’s musical influences include Charley Pride, Linda Martell, Dolly Parton, and The Chicks, and these artists’ impact on Parker can be seen in her storytelling. Her 2021 single “The Flame” has over one million online streams, and Parker is currently working on her EP to release soon.

5. Justin Champagne

Champagne’s musical career took off in 2016 with his debut single “Sun Goes Down” with its

hip-hop and country feel. Several of his songs have gone viral on TikTok, including “ When I Pull Up” and “Number to Heaven.” In February 2022, he released his most recent single “I’m the One.”

A few of RVSHVD’s hip-hop and country influences include Tupac, Lil Bow Wow, Eminem, George Strait, Alan Jackson, and Jason Aldean. His 2021 single “raised Up” earned the No. 1 spot on the Country iTunes Single chart.

7. PJ North

North blends classic country with pop, punk, and hip-hop to shape his musical narrative. Releasing his first single “Ridin’ (G-Body Shuffle)” with jacey j. in 2014, North has since released two EPs and the 2022 album Tell Yourself.
