Singer-songwriter Jordan Harvey was the latest guest on our original series Songs I Grew Up On. He hails from Scotland and talked about all of his traveling and writing he has going on. Harvey discussed his backstory, upbringing, and how listening to Johnny Cash influenced him. Harvey's debut single "Alabama Girl" is now available and it proves he is surely an artist to look out for.
1. "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash
Harvey gravitated towards the story-telling aspect of this song. "This is a book, but in song form," said the singer. Cash wrote and sang about authentic experiences, which is what Harvey appreciates the most. "It's such a well-known song globally," Harvey added.
2. "Oh Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison
"It was infectious as soon as I heard that," said Harvey. He referenced the movie Pretty Woman which is another favorite of his. His parents have a love story that inspires Harvey to this day, and the sweet song represents that feeling.
3. "Your Song" by Elton John
Harvey chose this song from the iconic singer because of the songwriting. "Melodically, I don't think you get a song better written than that. You can't listen to that song and not be happy," Harvey shared. He also touched on the influences that came from his parents and family, and his mom in particular loved John.
4. "Wonderwall" by Oasis
Harvey shared how the well-known British band influenced him stating," Sonically they were huge in the late '90s and early 2000s and it was all I really listened to." He looks back on the rhythm as impacting the music making he uses today. "It was the beat that inspired 'Alabama Girl,'" he admitted.
5. "Start Me Up" by The Rolling Stones
"I wanted to pick one that inspires my performance side of things and I love Jagger," said Harvey. He loves to entertain as much as he loves to write. Harvey has always been drawn to music that incorporates a variety of styles that can appeal to the masses, and The Rolling Stones certainly fall into that category.
