Songs I Grew Up On with Kolby Cooper

Kolby Cooper is a rising talent unlike any other. He shared his story along with his picks for our Songs I Grew Up On series. He enjoys fusing together rock and country into his Texan sound. With the release of his new album Boy From Anderson County on August 19th, the sky is the limit for what Cooper can accomplish.

1. "Rose In Paradise" by Waylon Jennings.

This song is tied to so many of his memories as a kid. "It was the first song that really stood out to me," shared Cooper. The singer even has a logo tattooed on his arm from the iconic track.

2. "This Cowboy's Hat" by Chris LeDoux

Cooper's dad worked at a ranch, so this song made an impact on his growing up. He noted the song's production and style as being "captivating." It was one of the first times he heard a song that identified with his own life.

3. "Empire State Of Mind" by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys

He comes from east Texas but admits he was "always fascinated by New York. "It was the first rap album I ever heard," Cooper explained. It inspired him to want a different way of life than what he was exposed to.

4. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana

"It was a whole genre I hadn't heard before. To hear someone be so raw and real was inspiring," said Cooper. He noted that the grunge genre provided inspiration for the lyricism he uses to this day.

5. "I Miss You" by Blink-182

He hadn't listened to Blink-182 until he was a senior in high school. He wanted to check them out and was blown away. "I was amazed I had never listened to this band before," shared Cooper.
