Songs I Grew Up On With Love & Theft

The duo known as Love & Theft has been celebrating the release of brand new music. Their EP Better Off has received rave reviews from fans and critics alike. This EP is the first time the guys have released new music in almost seven years. Eric, one-half of the group, admitted that the band didn't undertake a musical hiatus, but more of a "release hiatus." They continued to tour their older music until they were ready to get back into the studio. Stephen and Eric sat down to be a part of our original series Songs I Grew Up On, and their answers might surprise you.

1. "One" by Three Dog Night"

This unconventional pick stood out to Stephen from a young age. He was a preacher's kid, so this style of music was brand new to him. That song brings back important memories for the singer that realized there was more music beyond the Christian music he was raised with.

2. "Peaceful, Easy, Feeling" by Eagles

Eric has so many ties to this iconic band. Like Stephen, Eric grew up listening to mostly Christian and worship music. He especially loved the message of this song and it was one of the first he learned to play on the guitar.

3. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana

This Iconic rock song is Stephen's "favorite of all time." It's pretty hard to look back at the '90s and not think of this Nirvana track. As it was speaking to a whole generation, it was also speaking to Stephen.

4. "For The Sake Of The Call"

When Eric was six or seven years old, he remembers hearing this tune. It had an impact on the styles of music he would continue to be drawn to.

5. "House That Built Me" by Tom Douglass feat. Miranda Lambert

Douglass created his own version of the Lambert hit, and it touched Stephen in a major way. He admits that it spoke to him and his upbringing, unlike other songs. "One of the things I love about country music is that song could not fit in any other genre," he shared.

6. "Learning To Fly" by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers

"I've always been a huge Tom Petty fan," shared Eric. He learned to play the guitar while listening to this tune and it helped to shape how important writing would become for him. "He's a brilliant writer and it was one of the first secular songs I really listened to," Eric noted.
