Songs I Grew Up On with Matt Stell

Matt Stell rose to fame with the mash hit "Prayed For You," and has since been a promising force in country music. His singles "Everywhere But On" and "Boyfriend Season" have become fan favorites. Stell's most recent song "Man Made" only further proves his talent. The singer sat down for The Nash News' series Songs I Grew Up On to talk about where he got his musical inspirations.

1. "It's A Great Day To Be Alive" by Travis Tritt

"It has this positive vibe that's not goofy or Disney," shared Stell. He also talked about the songwriters behind this track who also wrote for artists like The Chicks. "Everyone knows the chorus, and you get happy when you sing it," said Stell. This song happens to be the second most popular song artists choose for this segment.

2. "Let Her Cry" Hootie and the Blowfish

This is a classic song choice. "That record came out when I was pretty young, and that song in particular really stood out," Stell explained. "I didn't know what this song was about until I got older and could really appreciate it."

3. "Hand in My Pocket" by Alanis Morissette

"I remember the first time I was in my mom's Toyota corolla and I remember this song coming on. I don't know why it hit me like it did. This may be the greatest single and most impactful song to me," Stell told The Nash News. He went on to say, "She was writing music that mattered."

4. "Waymore's Blues" by Waylon Jennings

"He was spitting bars on this song," Stell teasingly shared. The writing is what stood out to the singer-songwriter the most. The conversation then turned to the history of the song, and how "If you get arrested in Memphis, you know you're bad news."

5. "In Color" by Jamey Johnson

When Johnson performs this song live, Stell agrees it is "life-changing." "I started writing songs like this to be like these kinds of songs. They say a lot without saying much," shared Stell. He went on to say, "To say so much but say so little is country music at its finest."
