Tyler Farr Talks New Song with Jelly Roll, "Country As Shit"

Tyler Farr is an artist who has seen success throughout his career. After spawning No. 1 hits and playing shows all over the country, he has never lost sight of who he is. The authenticity Farr carries in his life has always been evident in his music. Now, Farr has teamed up with a dynamic newcomer who goes by the name Jelly Roll. Farr discussed how his collaboration with Jelly Roll came to be, and where he sees himself within Nashville today.

Country fans first got to know Farr as he burst onto the scene with songs like "Redneck Crazy," and "A Guy Walks Into A Bar." In his younger years, the singer has classical vocal lessons and even went to college on a vocal performance scholarship. In high school, Farr's mom married George Jones' lead guitar player which made him fall in love with country music. When deciding to leave college Farr explains, "I literally one day packed my stuff up and moved to Nashville. Eventually, I started singing like four nights a week, and 17 years later here we are."

On how Nashville has changed since he started out, Farr exclaims with a laugh, "There's an Apple store on Broadway for God's sake. Hank Williams is probably rolling in his grave." He adds, "The thing about country music is that it always changes. Early on in my career, there were the set honky tonks people played in. Every singer-songwriter knew everyone. Now you gotta post stuff on TikTok and I feel like I'm 80 years old."

"Country As Shit" sees Farr collaborating with Jelly Roll, who is now a great friend. "Me and Jelly really got to be friends over COVID. I never heard of him before. When I met him I didn't know who he was but he was just a nice dude and we got good vibes from each other," says Farr. It was from participating in charity gold outings that the two got to know each other. "He doesn't have much of a filter, hence why we got along," Farr quips.

"Right after I wrote 'Country As Shit,' I needed to get one of my buddies on this. This would be a perfect hillbilly-redneck duo," thought Farr. He went on to say, "I was drunk dialing Jelly Roll from Costa Rica. It was a typical drunk call. I was like 'Man I gotta play you this song,' and I just texted it to him. He was like, 'I'll sing on whatever you want me to sing on brother.'" Together, they figured out how to make it happen. "It took some coordination because you got me, Jelly Roll, and Jason Aldean who produced it. Aldean said he had to listen to some of Jelly's stuff and he came back and said, 'This dude's badass.'"

Farr also shares his perspective on the ever-evolving music industry and gives advice to young artists out there. "It was a grind. People ask me 'Would you change it?' Absolutely not. I wouldn't be able to write the songs I do now. The music industry is tough. If you ain't tough, this town will walk all over you. The town ain't got rid of me yet," shares Farr. "I just stuck to what I know. Some years it's gonna be hot and sometimes it's not. I just find it easier to get through life and your career if you stick to your guns."
