64 years ago, a legend in the country music world was born. Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Alan Jackson. Here is a list of his best undiscovered songs. Happy Birthday, Alan Jackson!
1. “The Older I Get”
“The Older I Get” is a song close to Jackson’s heart. In fact, it was sung at his mother’s funeral before it was released on his album, Where Have You Gone. Jackson wanted to express his wisdom and how he wouldn’t change a thing about how far he has come. “And if they found a fountain of youth / I wouldn't drink a drop and that's the truth / Funny how it feels I'm just getting to my best years yet / The older I get.”
2. “Blessed Assurance”
In 2006, Jackson released Precious Memories, an album dedicated to covers of Christian hymns. The entire album is perfect for easy listening, especially “Blessed Assurance.” Jackson adds the perfect country twang to these traditional songs. “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! / O what a foretaste of glory divine!”
3. “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow”
This song hit big in 1990, reaching number two on Billboard’s US Hot Country Songs. However, it has lost its favoritism over the years, despite it being a catchy, fun song. “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow” is about Jackson trying to make a name for himself in the country music industry. “Just trying to be somebody / Just wanna be heard and seen / I'm chasing that neon rainbow / Living that honky-tonk dream.”
4. “I’d Love You All Over Again”
Released on Jackson’s 1991 album, Here in the Real World, “I’d Love You All Over Again” quickly gained popularity. It reached number one on RPM’s Canada Country Tracks and Billboard’s US Hot Country Songs in 1991. The lyrics are what sell the gentle love song: “And if I had it to do all over / I'd do it all over again / If tomorrow I found one more chance to begin / I'd love you all over again.”
5. “Dallas”
Jackson stayed high up on the charts in the 1990s, especially when “Dallas” came out. The song hit number one again on Billboard’s US Hot Country and RPM’s Canada Country Tracks in 1992. Jackson gained inspiration to write the song after he performed in Texas. “Oh, how I wish Dallas was in Tennessee / Then she'd be here with me / Then nothin' else would come between the two of us / If Dallas was in Tennessee.”
