Valerie Ponzio "Just A Bordertown" Song Review

Since her time on the 12th season of The Voice, Valerie Ponzio has begun building her career in country music. Her newest release, “Just A Bordertown,” is demonstrative of her growing skill as she develops as an artist. With a fresh perspective, her music has shown to be a win for the country genre.

Growing up on the U.S. border with Mexico, Ponzio had a lot of influence from Latin music and culture. She presents this impact with a beautiful fondness as she sings, “It taught me how to work hard / How to love with all my heart / My roots run deep in this dry desert ground.” Her upbringing in El Paso, Texas clearly brought her many emotionally valuable memories.

Her music demonstrates the influence that not just country, but Latin and pop music have had on her as an artist. Ponzio takes her culture and envelops it fully, and “Just A Bordertown” is the perfect example of this pride. “But this place wrote my story / And it’s still writing it for me / And it’s gonna stay with me, for the rest of my life.” She isn’t trying to escape her past, she wants it to be part of her future.

Ponzio’s mentality towards her hometown is inspiring to anyone, moving forward in life is exciting, but Ponzio refuses to forget her roots. As her music career builds, it’s stunning to witness the art she produces within her music. Ponzio’s Latin heritage is just as vital to her as her country roots, and that makes her unique in the industry.
