Jelly Roll Appears on the Joe Rogan Experience

Jelly Roll is a fixture in today's country music scene. With his larger-than-life persona and emotive songs, he has quickly become an artist to watch. Always bringing humor and honesty, the singer stopped by the Joe Rogan Experience to discuss his life and career. Here are some of the major takeaways.

Jelly Roll came up with the name for his upcoming album from where he used to smoke marijuana

In his younger days, the singer would smoke at Whistitt Baptist Church outside of Nashville. That experience made him reflect and discover how he wanted his next album to feel. "What's worship music for sinners sound like?" Jelly Roll thought.

He writes music to help others

Jelly Roll hopes that the lyrics he writes make his listeners feel something. Songs like "She" and "Save Me" which talk about addiction in particular, are meant to reach people who feel they are at their lowest.

"I had commercial success for the first time in my life, and I didn't know how to deal with that"

After seeing success with "Son Of A Sinner," Jelly Roll discussed how he felt the need to start chasing that even more. He had enough insight to realize that if he chased fame instead of music, he would lose himself as an artist.

Jelly Roll opens up about his time in jail

The singer spent over a decade in and out of correctional facilities and was even charged as an adult at the age of 16. He was involved in an armed robbery where money and weed were being stolen. "I regret it every day of my life Joe," said Jelly Roll. He also went on to share that because of the felony, he cannot buy a home or even volunteer at the YMCA.

Jelly Roll's promise to a juvenile center

The singer opened up about how it felt to play a sold-out Bridgestone Arena, and that it was near the juvenile center he used to stay at. He visited those kids and told them, "I got y'all's back." He intends to build a studio and trade programs so that the kids at the center find ways to see a path forward, without violence and crime.
