Joy Oladokun 'Proof Of Life' Album Review

Joy Oladokun is a singer-songwriter who has been making waves in the music industry with their heartfelt and powerful performances. Their music is a beautiful blend of folk, pop, and soul, with impressive vocals and poignant lyrics that speak to the human experience. Oladokun's latest album, Proof of Life, was released on April 28th, 2023.

Proof of Life is a 13-track album with big-name features like folk artist Noah Kahan, and country legend Chris Stapleton. Each song is a unique exploration of the human experience; Oladokun showcases the pieces that came together to form the person they are today. The album opens up with “Keeping The Light On,” an encouraging anthem that urges listeners to keep their chins up. Oladokun exclaims, “Oh, all I know / Is we can’t, we won’t let go / Keeping the light on, light on ain’t easy / Keeping the fight on, so long, is hard to do / For all the times you feel the weight / There might just be a better way.”

The seventh entry “Sweet Symphony,” features country music legend, Chirs Stapelton. “Sweet Symphony” is an intoxicating love song, combining the sweet soulful stylings of country and hip hop. Whenever two of the most powerful singers and advocates of the human soul come together, they are sure to deliver an impactful message. This song tells of times when everything in love comes together to form something greater. Oladokun sings, “Loving you’s a sweet, sweet symphony/ That all of Heaven and Earth join to sing.”

Another notable feature is the collaboration with Noah Kahan, “We’re All Gonna Die.” This track is an upbeat picture of pessimism. The juxtaposition of the joyous sound and tragic lyrics come together to form the perfect picture of irony. Kahan and Oladokun’s voices and styles mesh perfectly with this rock-pop style. Oladokun sings happily, “We’re all gonna die tryna' figure it out / We’re all gettin' high any way we know how / We’re over our heads, so I’ll say it out loud / We’re all gonna die tryna figure it out.”
