Maggie Baugh Tells Two Stories in “Drinking to the Broken Hearts”
“I’m on cloud nine,” rising country singer-songwriter Maggie Baugh says after spending the morning updating her numbers on Spotify and finding that she hit 476,000 streams on her single “Think About Me:” the single she released earlier this year in June. “Never in a million years did I think this would happen.” Just a few days ago, the song passed over half a million streams.
When Baugh put out “Think About Me” she had 600 monthly listeners on Spotify and just this past week, she cracked the 100,000 monthly listeners milestone. Her next single “Drinking to the Broken Hearts” shows a different side to the singer-songwriter, and as she gears up for the release, she reflects on how the process for the new song differs from the last.
“When I’m looking back at how I wrote ‘Think About Me,’ it doesn’t even seem like I wrote it, you know what I mean? It was one of those out-of-body experiences,” she tells us. For “Drinking to the Broken Hearts,” the process was completely different as she continues, “I remember sitting in my chair and grinding, just trying to come up with song ideas. I was like, I really would love to write a song about the guy and female perspective about what would happen after a breakup.”
Baugh wrote the track in December of 2019 when she was only 19 years old. The song is technically a drinking song, so to give it the wings it needed, she entrusted Barrett Baber, the man behind Cody Johnson’s “Nothin’ on You,” to fill in the gaps.
The lyrics detail the girl’s side of the breakup juxtaposed next to the guy’s; Baugh intended to keep it gender-neutral. The song is slow and filled with imagery. It effortlessly captures a night out after a long hard day at a dimly lit bar surrounded by a world of strangers. In the second half of the chorus, Baugh sings, “This one’s for the girls on the bathroom floor wishing that he’d walk back through that door. All cried out, hair in a mess, phone on the right, and a bottle on the left. Raise one up for what love tour apart ‘cause tonight we’re drinking, drinking to the broken hearts.” Her songwriting is sympathetic and relatable, and she proves she knows how to tell a story even if it isn’t from her own perspective.
Through the new track, Baugh intends to show a different side of her and expand her range as an artist. When speaking about “Think About Me” she states, “It was the base. It was the concrete of the house.” And when examining her new addition to her discography she paints a metaphorical picture saying, “I think ‘Drinking to the Broken Hearts,’ it’s the next step of the house. It’s the walls of the house.”
And although her success over the past few months has exceeded her wildest dreams, she has no expectations for the new release. Her main goal is to have people hear it and feel less isolated in their thoughts and emotions showing the songstress’s heartfelt intentions with her music. “I want people to know it’s a metaphor for bringing people together,” she says. “And know that no matter what you’re going through, good or bad, there are people that are in your shoes and you’re never alone.”
